A Simple Beard Maintenance Guide
A good beard trim buys you a few weeks of a clean shape — but what happens in between is what actually keeps it looking intentional instead of just "growing in." Here's what's worth doing at home.
The daily basics
- Wash it, but not too much — 2-3 times a week with an actual beard wash is enough. Regular shampoo strips the natural oils that keep it soft.
- Comb it while damp — trains the direction of growth and cuts down on the wiry, going-every-direction look.
- A little oil or balm goes a long way — a few drops worked in after washing keeps it soft and cuts down on the itch, especially in the first few weeks of growing it out.
What to leave to a professional
Lining up the neckline and cheek line is the one thing worth leaving to a Stylist. It's easy to overcorrect at home and end up with a line that's too high or uneven — small mistakes there are hard to undo until it grows back out.
How often to come in
Every 2-3 weeks keeps the shape sharp without cutting off too much length between visits. If you're growing it out longer, stretching to every 4 weeks for a shape-up works fine — the goal is just keeping the edges clean while the length fills in.
Due for a shape-up? Add a trim to any haircut, or come in just for the beard.
